Here are some guidelines based on my little experience to get the most of the stars on your TV.
First of all, have a look at this site : satlex.de it has a dictionnary for all terms you may come across during the set up of your installation as other useful technical infos.
1) Check the schedules board to establish your list of competitions you want to see.
2)
a) Check on satfootball mainpage (Java menu -> Frequencies)
b) check www.lyngsat.com/europe.html or www.satcodx1.com/eng/ for the dish size requested for any channel you're interrested in.
50dBW = 60 cm
46dBW=80 cm
43dBW=100 cm
40dBW=120 cm
39dBW=135 cm
38dBW=150 cm
3) Now that you've selected what you want to see, you need to determine your budget anc choose your equipment.
a) the dishes :
Offset :
from 35€ (£23) for a 60cm one to 70€ (£46) for a 100cm one.
Offset multifeed :
the most common is with a simple hotbird/Astra monoblock LNB. (less than 39€, £26)
There are multifeed LNB supports too for these normal antennas. (60€, £45)
Toroidal :
Multiple LNBs on a single antenna (up to 40 degrees ex : Astra 2 to Atlantic Bird 1). (count 140€ (£95) for the antenna, 4 lnbs and a diseqc-"schalter" 4/1 - a bit more if you want to have 10 lnbs).
Motor :
Well, I can only suggest the two I have both Stab Usals (89€, £60). It is easier to set than a limited diseqc 1.2 and if the dish is well set on a sat, it'll find the other ones easely.
b) the receiver
There are 4 things to consider when you'll buy one :
- the possibility to insert a cam or a card in it.
- unofficial support.
- the available options.
(blind scan (needed if you want to search for feeds), diseqc 1.1 if you want to have more than 2 sats on one receiver, diseqc 1.2/Usals if you're tempted by a motor)
- the extras PVR, HD, terrestrial digital TV tuner or Twin Tuner and so on.
I do believe that these 3 basic models will suit most of your requests (tricks, community and quality/price - 120€, £80):
Technomate 1500CI (Perfect for ART)
Clarke Tech 2100 (Perfect for Digitalb)
Humax models
if you search for real quality, topfield receivers seem to be the best on the market.
I don't like the linux based and their networks receivers such as Dreambox/ItGate as it's never stable (it's like a Vista beta ;D) but that's my opinion.
c) Pay-TV
- EPL, Bundesliga & La Liga are not for free...
But there is much football for free if you have the adequate equipment for it (Champions League, UEFA Cup, Championship, French football, Scottish PL, Copa Libertadores, Dutch Eredivisie, Italian Serie A) on multiple sats (Turksat, Badr, Nilesat, Hotbird,...).
Even Eurosport is FTA (free to air) in German on Astra 19.2East.
- the cards :
There are many solutions not to pay for the expensive SKY + Sentanta for their football offers.
Such as Digitalb (definitely my favourite), ART, Premiere, Canal+ France which can nearly all been bought on the Web at reasonable prices (compared to their official prices) - Google/Ebay or satfootball sponsors to find the prices.
At this time of the season it is obviously hard to say which PayTV will have the competitions rights you request.
- the feeds
There are still loads of feeds with football matches (check the feeds board).
There's no EPL for free either there.
For these a motor is a must, a good size dish (100cm) and a blind scan receiver.
422 (not a football tactic) feeds format requires a PC Sat card or an expensive QualiTV receiver (believe me, it's the nutstiest receiver ever !).
- Emulators
As for the foreign subscriptions, the use of it is a criminal act.
These allow to watch some paytv for free.
It can be very frustrating when you miss the match of the season as they've just changed the necessary key to open sesame.
It can also be very expensive to pay for a module or card that will open some packages for a month that you paid more than 6 months of subscription.
Voilà, hope it'll be helpful to some of you.
